Education Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, accounting or business administration, or quantitative fields such as statistics, mathematics or engineering, is required

Experience:

Two years of related work experience and CFA charter, or credible progress toward earning the CFA charter, is preferred.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of this position is to assist in the oversight of the System’s Global Income Strategies portfolio. The current portfolio includes investments to public fixed income mandates, as well as a growing private credit allocation. This position will support comprehensive analysis and ongoing management of the current portfolio, as well as research, evaluate and recommend new public and private investments to the program.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Candidate will be actively involved in the TRS investment process and is expected to possess superior analytical skills, knowledge of complex investment strategies, organizational abilities and attention to detail. The ability to clearly communicate research and complex analysis is essential. Further, the candidate should have the confidence to express thoughts on the market environment, and how that environment might impact portfolio positioning and/or the total TRS asset allocation.

Job Description

Purpose:

Under the direction of the Senior Investment Officer – Global Income Strategies, the Investment Analyst – Global Income Strategies assists in coordinating and monitoring the investment of assets of the Teachers’ Retirement System.

Nature and Scope:

This position requires a thorough knowledge of general investment theory, with particular emphasis on fixed income investments. The incumbent must be able to function effectively in stressful situations and possess a high degree of skill in both oral and written communications. This position requires the incumbent to perform research to validate or invalidate hypotheses that relate to the performance of the fund. 

The incumbent must be able to work effectively with senior Investments staff, conduct thorough analysis and due diligence, and produce quantifiable recommendations supported by this research.

The greatest challenge of this position is twofold:  (1) function strategically to anticipate long term trends, opportunities and problems; and (2) perform the essential analytical tasks to produce retrospective conclusions and reports that document the current market trends and performance of managers and investments.

Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Assist the Senior Investment Officer – Global Income Strategies in preparing analyses, evaluations, and proposals for administering all both public income and private credit activity.
  2. Assist the emerging manager staff in preparing analyses, evaluations, and proposals for administering all emerging manager investment activity.
  3. Evaluate performance and portfolio characteristics to assure compliance with the directives of the trustees regarding investment objectives and constraints.
  4. Manage the potential investment manager search process by certifying that all proper search related milestones are followed, all contractual agreements are in place and all funding directives occur.
  5. Analyze the specific qualifications of prospective global public income and private credit investment opportunities in accordance with investment policy, asset allocation directives and mix, diversification strategies and guidelines controlling risk/return characteristics established by TRS.
  6. Prepare statistical and narrative reports regarding global income investments within the TRS portfolio.
  7. Create reports assessing the industry, measuring growth and performance statistics, new product offerings, mandate structures not currently utilized and general informational topics.
  8. Assist investment officer in negotiating and interacting at critical levels with outside managers and entities.
  9. Assist TRS investment accounting and custodian with all steps related to initial investment manager account set-up and ongoing performance calculations, fee assessments, and other related projects.
  10. Research investment approaches, asset mixes, and portfolio management techniques to provide for incremental return to TRS’s individual assets and at the total fund level.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.
