Several options are available to pay for optional service, refunds, or 2.2 upgrades. The table below will help you select an option.
Benefit Options for Members with Less Than Five Years of Service Credit
Single-Sum Retirement Benefit
A TRS member with less than five years of service credit and who taught after July 1, 1947, is eligible to receive a single-sum retirement benefit at age 65. This benefit is a standard annuity calculated at 1.67 percent of the final average salary for each year of creditable service.

Chapter 6: Optional Service Credit
You can obtain additional credit towards your retirement through purchases of optional service or repayment of refunds.
The purchase of optional service performed prior to Jan. 1, 2011 does not change your status from Tier 2 to Tier 1 membership.
